Common Hair Problems and Solutions

There are many problems can affect hair health and growth:

Hair loss – Can be caused by aging, genetics, hormonal changes or a medical condition. Solutions: medication like Minoxidil or Finasteride; low level laser therapy; PRP therapy; hair transplant.

Dandruff – Caused by a fungal infection leading to inflammation and flaking. Solutions: use an anti-dandruff shampoo with ketoconazole or zinc pyrithione 2-3 times a week. When severe see a doctor for prescription medication.

Dry and frizzy hair – Caused by lack of moisture due to sun exposure, heat styling or dry climate. Solutions: Use a moisturizing shampoo and deep conditioning masks. Limit washing to 2-3 times weekly and use a leave-in conditioner. Apply hair oil to mid-lengths and ends. Limit sun exposure and heat styling.

Oily roots with dry ends – Produced by overactive oil glands in the scalp. Solutions: Use a shampoo for oily hair at the roots and a conditioner just on the mid-lengths and ends. Apply hair oil primarily to the ends. Wash hair 2 times a week.

Split ends – Caused by lack of moisture, sun damage or rough handling. Solutions: Get a trim to remove split ends. Use a leave-in conditioner and air dry or braid your hair. Limit sun exposure, heat styling and brushing.
